EARLY IRON AGE (500 BCE–550 CE)
Traces in the landscape from the Early Iron Age tell stories of unrest, power struggles and long-distance trading. There were large boathouses by the fjord, fortifications on the surrounding hills, and they produced enormous amounts of iron – a highly sought-after metal.
Important people were buried with valuable imported goods from the Roman Empire. Such objects arrived either by people serving in the Roman army, or through bartering or plunder.
Being part of a warband could earn you status and honour. It probably also provided access to material goods, as warrior chiefs were known to reward loyal fighters with exclusive gifts.
